Future of our Open Collective - xmpp foundation wants to support only Prav due to high fees

PP Pirate Praveen Public Seen by 9

Since current fee for XSF as fiscal host (to be paid to Open Source Collective) is 60 usd per month, XSF wants to support only Prav - which would make them eligible for free tier.

Some options,

  1. Move our collective as a project under prav. Prav bye laws already has supporting similar projects in bye-laws. See point 17 at https://codeberg.org/prav/bye-laws/src/branch/main/bye-laws.md#5-objectives-and-functions

  2. Move to Open Source collective as fiscal host, this would mean 10% fees.

  3. Move to Liberapay.

If it works for Prav, I don't have any issue

As explained in my comment, I agree with this in principle although I think we should wait and get more clarity before making a decision on the Prav end. Hopefully we will already have that clarity by the time the proposal reaches Prav!

This is worst case scenario - hopefully XSF and OSC can find a way to keep the existing collective.

Once we agree, we need to request Prav, then Prav need to request XSF.

The amount is not 60 USD per year but 59/mo or 650 per year!!! I think that is partly why XSF is objecting, because it is such a large fee.

However, Open Collective explained that is due to XSF using Wise or PayPal as a payout option. If XSF switches to bank transfer, it will be only $10 per additional collective per month and that too only for collectives that receive money in that month.

I think we should first relay this new information to XSF and see if they are willing to continue fiscal hosting after all, before trying for this. I'm going to write to them from the Prav side and update here when we hear back. This is not about Prav or Durare but about having a good fiscal hosting option for XMPP projects in general, including new ones that may come up in future (eg. Convo). A workaround is for Prav to "host" them as projects under their collective (and the plan is for Prav to itself become a fiscal host when possible) but again this will be simple only for projects based in India.

I am okay with Durare being fiscally hosted under Prav anyway to save XSF that additional $10 fee. However, I feel we should not confuse the issue and first push for XSF to continue the fiscal hosting programme for other projects too (at least in principal). Hence, I am agreeing to the proposal from this end but suggest waiting to hear from XSF before reaching out from Prav. Since the voting process will take some time, hopefully we'll have more clarity on this by the time the poll reaches the Prav side.

@Badri Sunderarajan Ah, that is huge fee. I thought Peter made a typo in the email! Yes, lets see what XSF decides with the new information. But good to be prepared early for the worst case scenario. Prav becoming fiscal host won't work - Navodaya tried, but Stripe don't support Indian accounts receiving money - not even from India. This would require adding RazorPay support to Open Collective.

Btw wire transfer costs 25 USD for each transfer, so if XSF is hosting collectives that can accept Wise or Paypal, using bank transfer as only option may be more costly. Just to be aware about it in the larger context, even though only Bank transfer will work for Prav.
