Migrating to Hetzner Cloud
We found an even cheaper hosting option - the same spec we currently have and pay 11.76 Euro is available at 3.29 Euro (though disk space is half at 40GB).
We can track technical details here https://gitlab.com/piratemovin/diasp.in/-/issues/81
Anyone would like to volunteer for migrating the server ? We have to create an account, then buy a server and then install Debian 12, postgresql and prosody, then copy the already uploaded files, configuration and database to new server.

Would you volunteer to migrate to a cheaper hosting provider? Closed Wed 10 Jul 2024 8:00AM
We have 3 volunteers and Hetzner Cloud account, hopefully they can find some time and schedule the migration soon.
What is the team, working group or event you are inviting people to?
Migrate the current server from Infomaniak Public Cloud to Hetzner Cloud.
Why is this important?
We can save about 72 % on our hosting charges.
What are you asking people to do?
We have to create an account at console.hetzner.de, then buy a server with Debian 12, install postgresql and prosody, then copy the already uploaded files and database to new server.
I'd be happy to guide if you are interested to learn and has some experience with GNU/Linux command line. It is not very complicated process, all we have to do is copy files between two servers.

@deadman We have the setup documented here https://gitlab.com/piratemovin/diasp.in/-/wikis/XMPP You can also join @Buster Keaton in a tmux session/jitsi call for the setup.

Hetzner will ask for an identity document. So keep that in mind when signing up.

@Akshay yes, they asked and @Buster Keaton completed verification and created a server. Next step is setting up DNS entry (some sub domain of diasp.in) and learn/practice prosody server setup before the live migration. Good time for folks who wanted to learn self hosting/contribute but don't have confidence or experience. I'm happy to guide anyone interested. We need more volunteers to make community hosting sustainable.

Would like to know how we are setting things up and migrating. So that will be able to troubleshoot or fix, like in case of service being down.
