When you want to save contacts in a different script (for example I save new contacts in Malayalam and have old contacts carried over from previous phones in English), you will have to usually search using both scripts. If we have phonetic matching, searching with either script will give desired results.

Why is this important?

This is important for people using different scripts than Latin (Arabic, Chinese, Indic etc).
