An action plan / strategy for current times

I suggest we focus on this question to find people who might work with us.

  1. How do you rate democracy in India on a scale of 0-10? Countries like China and Iran would be 0 and Scandinavian countries like Island, Finland, Sweden, Norway would rank 10 - free education and healthcare for all.

  2. Do you think the opposition parties would improve the situation, even if they are not the ideal situation.

We have to collect people who think the opposition would be relatively better (not fascist, not obviously majoritarian) and try and unite the opposition as splitting on anti BJP votes would play a major spoiler to defeating BJP.

What do you think ?

Random thoughts
1. Free education and healthcare sounds confusing to me. Education and healthcare are not like sunlight to get it free. People have to work to offer healthcare and education. Are we expecting medics and teachers to work without remuneration?

  1. The opposition parties main focus is to cater to the interest of a large minority which doesn't understand the concept of minority rights and individual rights. What is our agenda here?

@Jemshid KK
1. that's not how free education and healthcare work. they are compensated by the tax that the citizens pay.
2. the agenda is simply to not have fascists rule i guess

@Pirate Praveen Yes, we can circulate this question on our social handles and ask people in real life to get some people who believe that the opposition can change things.

@Ravi Dwivedi this. we need more real life activism.

I think one more question that is crucial is,

  1. How likely it is for India to become a Hindu Rashtra as envisioned by RSS.

Based on how realistic people feel about the possibility, approach to other parties, especially Congress can vary greatly. Only if people realize we are in danger of slipping out of democracy in an irreversible way, people would consider the possibility of keeping democracy, with less than ideal parties like Congress.

@Pirate Praveen that's the thing, they don't sense the danger of losing democracy because they are so distracted by the other dangers and threats (i.e. to religion, caste, etc)

@kishy I think @Pirate Praveen is talking about people like you and me, who don't think in terms of caste or religion. But they are not able to differentiate between BJP and Congress.

If you say BJP is doing this/that, they will respond by saying that Congress is corrupt, for example. They are not able to differentiate between a corrupt party and a corrupt and fascist party.

Such arguments don't help us in defeating the BJP as such people may not go to vote (thinking all the parties are equally evil) and a potential anti-BJP vote wasn't cast, or they might vote for some party which cannot defeat the BJP.

We should probably ask this question on our home page too and offer a form for people to answer.

in my view, indian democracy has plummeted to a 2 or 3. maybe even worse. how do you begin to rate a democracy where the election commission is compromised.

The way I quantify is by looking at the following:

  • there is opposition in India in every state in the form of political parties as well as voters. Opposition campaigns in Bihar limited SIR deletions to some extent during the recent state elections, so it is not like Election Commission is successful in doing . When you read election data, my advice is to also look at each party's vote share (rather than just number of seats). This much opposition is not present in Russia, China.

  • Independent media channels and prominent YouTubers are still able to speak against the government (not something possible in China or Russia)

  • There were major recent court decisions (major ones) which go against the government, For example, this, this and this were very recent and major ones which went against the BJP.

  • BJP is running a minority government (240 MPs in Lok Sabha), not in majority any more like previous two terms.

  • There are states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab which are still out of reach for BJP.
