Do you self-host your comms? Why (or why not)?

We are communicating more than at any other time in the history of humanity. Maybe we aren't good at it (happens), but that is not the focus.

Do you self-host your e-mail? Chat? Photo albums? VPN?

Why not? Or why? What was the expected value, and the realized value? How difficult was it?
