Discussion for Future of diasp.in

S sahilister Public Seen by 87

We plan to discuss the future of diasp.in today at 7 PM on the sideline of DebCamp23, as most people are present here. Venue would be noisy hacklab on 2nd floor.

Points we want to discuss:

i) if keeping around is worthwhile

ii) maintainer ship + sponsorship. For now it cost around 3500 INR/month which is borne co-borne by rajudev and me. Also we have domain cost. Last renewal was sponsored by abbyck

iii) we are also considering sunsetting the service with 31st Dec end period.

Attendee : Pirate Praveen, Sahil Dhiman, Pirate Bady, Akhil Varkey, Renjith Siji, Ravi Dwivedi, Yashraj Moghe, Abhijith Balan, Abhijith PA, Aravinth Manivannnan, Raju Vindhane

Minutes :

    Sahil explains diasp.in.

There is no correct estimate of active users.

There is no complaint when services go down.

There is a lot of cost associated with maintaining the service - INR 3,500 per month.

Sahil is suggesting  that we post in public that we are going to shut it down.

Praveen is suggesting that we initially give call for volunteers in public and then we shut it down.

Both maintenance and bearing cost are issues

If new maintainers come, they can get started easily - Sahil.

One month to announce shutdown, one month to look for a different maintainer.

If volunteers come in we can apply for funding.

Praveen suggests reopening registration to invite new users - if we get volunteers for spam handling and server maintenance.

Timeline

  • 31st October: last date for anyone to take up stuff. If no one does it.

  • 31st January - shut down services

  • 28th Feburary - delete the machine

So we have it on homepage, dedicated page with a volunteer form, thanks to @Satan Vysakh . I started promoting the call for help in prav group with this message "diasp.in, which shares our goals of providing private communication services to public and inspired prav to make different choices in community model, is looking for volunteers, https://diasp.in/volunteer if you can, please join, we can recommend diasp.in to people who can't afford our subscriptions (diasp.in also provide xmpp service and is interoperable with prav). I was part of the diasp.in team from the start." Please spread the word, a personal message rather than copy pasting a template would be more appealing I think.

@Satan Vysakh can we make the call for volunteers more prominent on the homepage? Also everyone else, please share this call for help in all relevant groups and from your personal social media handles - the more personal the call is the better.

We already have 3 volunteers, so I think we can plan the next steps. In my mind, these are 1. Setup backup (we will need a place to backup, we can use rdiff-backup with cron) 2. migrate to a smaller/cheaper host and validating the backup 3. Find sponsors and fiscal host for donations.
