P2P? Why and how.

LIT Life is Tetris Public Seen by 98

A recent proposal over P2P adoption instead of hosted services triggered a need to flesh the motivations for it. That proposal summarized it thus:

P2P protocols give user more anonymity, freedom & control over their data than any existing alternatives.

Our Requirements:

  • Cross Platform (mobile & desktop)

  • Group chat

  • file sharing

  • Voice / video calls

IPv6 suggests to use MAC IDs for IPv6 addresses, which sounds reliable but not anonymous. If anonymity isn't a hard requirement of P2P, OK I guess. Not sure it is feasible if left to corporates, though. 2G is still around more than a decade after 3G! COBOL too. Difficult to stop legacy support, looks like.

I would assume that any anonymity issue that's present with ipv6 would also be present with ipv4.

There needs to be more discussion around P2P now due to compliance with the DPDPA

Applicable to P2P is https://webxdc.org and a repository of apps served at xstore@testrun.org from the magnificient minds behind https://delta.chat who had a blog post saying https://briarproject.org was following the WebXDC work.
