Future of our Open Collective - xmpp foundation wants to support only Prav due to high fees

Since current fee for XSF as fiscal host (to be paid to Open Source Collective) is 60 usd per month, XSF wants to support only Prav - which would make them eligible for free tier.

Some options,

  1. Move our collective as a project under prav. Prav bye laws already has supporting similar projects in bye-laws. See point 17 at https://codeberg.org/prav/bye-laws/src/branch/main/bye-laws.md#5-objectives-and-functions

  2. Move to Open Source collective as fiscal host, this would mean 10% fees.

  3. Move to Liberapay.

At present it seems, merging under Prav is the best option, OSC charges 10% host fees, and Librepay is not well supported in India.

Prav has agreed https://codema.in/d/mVzNbtHy/board-meeting-minutes-16th-october-2025 now we need to check if XSF also agree and if yes, ask OSC to make the move.

As discussed in Prav channels, the current plan of XSF is to stop fiscal hosting entirely. We have asked XSF, from Prav side, to reconsider this decision. But we need to think of a backup plan. I think Open Collective Europe may be a better option if they can fund our Hetzner account directly.

@Pirate Praveen Yes, we can try that. On their Open Collective page, they mention - 10% for bank transfers. Payment to Hetzner account is also done by bank transfer, so I don't know if 10% fees would be charged there also or not.

@Buster Keaton they exclude political campaigns (even though durare don't Indian Pirates affiliation may be an issue), so main OSC would be the only option.

Other thing I noticed is that XSF has 0% Host Fee, whereas Open Collective Europe has 8%.

Hosting with XSF helped reduce wire transfer fee by batching with Prav. We will lose that advantage when we move to different fiscal host, especially since our donations remained small.

Are there any organisations (known either to us or to XSF) who might be willing to take on the role as fiscal host for XMPP related projects? One option is that the XSF vets the projects but passes on the work of actually hosting and accounting etc. to that other organisation, if such exists.

I had contacted Peter for asking their permission to move durare collective under Prav as a project, they have agreed to do so if Prav is ok with it. Pasting below our conversation for reference -

Hi Buster,

Personally I think it is a fine idea to move diasp.in and durare.org as Open Collective "projects" under the Prav "collective". This would simplify things in several ways and provide a way for Prav and related projects to figure things out in India (e.g., create a cooperative). I think this would be a good interim step, instead of shutting down all fiscal hosting immediately. I don't think the XSF is in a hurry about all of this.

I would prefer to close down the fiscal hosting program in an orderly manner, so let's proceed with your proposal about diasp.in and durare.org if the other Prav people think that's a good idea.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your reply. I was under impression that we might have to take actions quickly. Still, if you are okay with it then I will contact Open Collective to ask them about moving diasp.in and durare.org collective under Prav Collective as project.

Thank you.

Best,
Buster

So, as you can see, Peter has given a go ahead for merging diasp.in and durare.org collective under Prav collective as a project.

We have moved the collective already. The old link would continue working as it will redirect to new project page. So we don't need to move any links.
