Add to manifesto: No CCTV cameras in classrooms

RD Ravi Dwivedi Public Seen by 27

I propose that we add it to our manifesto that we will not install any CCTV cameras in classrooms.

CCTV cameras are a direct violation of right to privacy of students. Any argument of installing CCTV cameras is weaker than the privacy argument. Quoting Bruce Schneier :

security must be evaluated not based on how it works, but on how it fails.

And it fails badly.

Side note: We also need to teach people that they should not give away civil liberties in the name of security. It does not solve anything but it gives an illusion that we are doing something. It is a routine practice that easy measures are adopted to solve complex problems rather than understanding and attacking their root causes.

In last few years, we have seen students being protestors as well. CCTV cameras might be used to "discipline" them as many times teachers/parents might not be approving of the protests(it can be against the schools/colleges itself)

Maybe the 'no cctv in classrooms' seems to be a very narrow goal. Maybe we should club all places where CCTV is not required into a single point in manifesto. Why focus only on classrooms?

Please comment on how can we make this point broader. And I will follow up with a proposal.

I don't think making it broader makes it better. We will need different arguments and analysis of pros and cons depending on the situation.
