Creating a collective on Open Collective

PP Pirate Praveen Public Seen by 20

Now that we have a list of high priority tasks and want to raise funds, we should create a collective on OpenCollective.com The default fiscal host for Free Software projects is Open Source Collective, but they usually expect a classic project and not a "meta" project like ours I think. Also they charge a fee of 10% or close to it. Should we ask someone already into Free Software mobile like Purism or FuriLabs or Pine64, if they are willing to be fiscal host without charging a fee, as it would directly benefit them? OpenCollective allows any legal entity to be a fiscal host and handle finances.

@Pirate Praveen I have reviewed the writeup and added my changes in this pad https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/edit/vo6U8Fg1iMGl-tn9qVSV0vL+/.

I think the question "How do you plan to coordinate feature prioritization and development across the different Debian-based mobile distros?" isn't answered (or I overlooked). Maybe you can write one sentence about your experience of fundraising similar projects on Open Collective.

@Ravi Dwivedi we can add "We will try to implement features in upstream projects whenever possible so all distributions will eventually gets it".

Maybe we can organize our write-up in question-answer format.

Thanks to Ravi, Akhil and Contrapunctus for the review. I have replied in opencollective.

Thanks for your response.

Before we move forward with accepting your community, I have one quick request: would you be open to revising your account name? I’m bringing this up not to be nitpicky, but because I want to help prevent potential issues down the line Let me explain.

Right now, “Fund Phosh on Debian for Mobile” feels more like a campaign or call to action than the name of a collective or working group. To avoid any confusion, especially around whether this effort is officially tied to the Phosh or Debian projects, we’d recommend something a bit less campaign-focused and more reflective of the community behind the work. Something even like “Phosh on Debian for Mobile Community Group” or “ - User Group” (or something a bit catchier than those examples!) could work well.

If you decide on a noun vs verb name, you can always get more specific about the actual campaign on your Open Collective page, especially by creating Projects to highlight a particular goal.

As a fiscal host, it’s  important to us that it’s clear we’re not funding official project development or speaking on behalf of those maintainers. A more neutral name will help avoid misunderstandings and make it clearer we’re not stepping on the toes of other organizations that may already be supporting the official projects. Another perk of having a neutral name is if you need to enter into any type of agreement or contract, which would help avoid legal confusion. Let us know your thoughts.

We need to find a new name for the collective.

PhoMo: a community of people dedicated to daily driving mobile gnu/linux without "missing out" on stability and usability. (Adding gnu/linux as in Debian). Suggested by earboxer on XMPP/Matrix group.

PhoMo has come out as the top candidate in this poll! We can start using this as our community/project name instead of the somewhat unwieldy "Debian on Mobile (with Phosh) Funding" or "Fund Phosh on Debian for Mobile" that we've been using in places. As the priority of this project remains unchanged, maybe we can move that to the description instead.

In the meantime, we can respond to Open Collective saying we've chosen PhoMo as the our name and are in the progress of updating it across our channels.

What is this poll about?

Open Collective suggested renaming to avoid confusion by explicitly making this a community in the name also.

Why is this important?

This will help us raise funds via opencollective.com

What are you asking people to do?

Arrange name in your order of preference.

Vote by ranking the options in order of your preference. The option that ranks first in the results wins.

4 - DePho

5 - DEPHCOM

After re-reading the discussions I actually like PhoMo after all. It has many (fun) layers of meaning to it. The only concern was reopening the debate about whether to support other platforms besides Phosh/Debian. But if we state our position clearly in the description I don't think that'd be an issue.

Phobian also has a nice ring to it, although hopefully it won't be mistaken for another distro!

Not sure about the other three; they're all usable but there's nothing to them that stands out to me.

I like the funny aspect of PhoMo, also I think this name is easy to remember. And, the Mo part clearly refers to mobile devices. I like Phobian as well, but it might be a bit too confusing for people with Mobian. I have no strong preference for the remaining three, but put still put them in order of my preference.

Really I'm only considering PhoMo and PhoDe, with a strong preference for PhoMo.

I would remove the others if I could: DePho means a defect in French, DEPHCOM is far too military, and phobian sounds like a mix between phobia and Mobian...

@Badri Sunderarajan there is another collective by the name Phomo! So we need to add some more (special) characters or go with second choice (dephcom is not taken). May be another poll? Pho-Mo vs Pho_Mo vs Phomos vs PhosMo vs PhomoFund vs Dephcom

BS

Badri Sunderarajan Tue 15 Apr 2025 10:10AM

@Pirate Praveen how about "Debian PhoMo Community"? We are Debian users who have FOMO about missing out on functional phones/mobiles so we are working on improving Phosh on Mobile support.

The URL could be DebPhoMo (or debphomo if it has to be lowercase)

This would solve the issue of reopening the discussion on which platforms to support. My only concern is that it might be confused with the existing PhoMo collective, although we are quite different from a quiz app.

BS

Badri Sunderarajan Tue 15 Apr 2025 10:14AM

On consideration, maybe DebPhoMo as the name itself is even better. There's no scope for confusion with Phomo, and we still get to do the PhoMo wordplay. Additionally, we immediately indicate our connection to Debian so if people want to know what our focus is it's all in the title.

However, I'm open to other suggestions too. I'd like to know what others think about "fixing" this top name vs. going with the second or third option instead (although personally I agree with DEPHCOM sounding a bit militaristic)

New name for this community/project (because the one we chose is taken!) Closed Tue 22 Apr 2025 3:00PM

DEPHCOM is a clear winner! We can move forward with registering this name on Open Collective (as well as eventually renaming our current forum and chatspaces accordingly).

What is this poll about?

I thought we were done, but unfortunately the top choice (PhoMo) is already taken by an existing collective :(

So we're thinking of either a modified version (DebPhoMo) or the second highest ranked option (DEPHCOM).

Why is this important?

We need to select a unique name for Open Collective!

What are you asking people to do?

Choose the option that you favour—and not mandatory, but as can be seen from the last poll stating your reason helps!

DEPHCOM

The other one is too long

BS

Badri Sunderarajan Thu 17 Apr 2025 4:06PM

DebPhoMo

PhoMo was my top choice last time, but since it's out of running I think DebPhoMo is a decent compromise! The "FOMO" joke is not as clear as in the original, but it is still somewhat clear as "Debian + FOMO". Additionally, this will alleviate some concerns that leaving Debian out of the name will lead people to debating what distro to support.

I can't relate to DEPHCOM as much and similar to what @Rémi Letot said in the previous poll I think it's a bit too militaristic.

I have renamed our collective to opencollective.com/dephcom and applied again to Open Source Collective as fiscal host.

Our collective is live! We can now proceed to setting up bounties for the items identified as top priorities in the last poll.
