Update About section of the FSCI website.

I think a few points can be added in the 'About' section of our website https://fsci.in/about/

The points can be as follows:

  1. non hierarchy

  2. All members take part in decision-making. Our decisions are made by consensus of members.

  3. we believe in inclusivity and dignity of every person (see fsci.in/code-of-conduct)

  4. we are actively looking to increase diversity in the community.

    In addition, the earlier points in the about page can be retained.

Please give suggestions and comments to improve this.

Praveen: Anyone contributing to Free Software in any way (not just technical contributions but any time and effort contributions) can be a member if two existing members vouch for their contributions.

Last date to comment: 10- May-2022.

I think we can add: "In the starting days of computing, it was enough to be a Free Software user to enjoy freedom in your computer. We believe that, in today's world, being a Free Software user is not enough, due to network effect (like, people are forced to use WhatsApp just because others use it), we need to step in as a community and build a movement."

Sounds good. Make a proposal with at least one month time for votes. I think non-hierarchy needs some explanation. How about this ? "We don't have a president, secretary or other supreme leader. Different people take leadership at different times when required. People follow when they are convinced by a proposal."

I think one proposal for all points is fine. If we get comments, we can still make amendments on the go.

I think we also need to explain how we decide to start, maintain or shut down a service. "When there are volunteers and funding for a Free Software powered service, we will maintain the service. If we don't have enough volunteers or funding for an existing service, we will be forced to shut down a service. If you care about a service we run, please volunteer or donate". Link to donate page.

May be we should talk about how funding is handled too, for transparency. "Many members have access to hosting accounts to calculate our expenses. Donations are received by some members in personal accounts but community keeps track of the donations through an independent survey form. So anyone can tally the money received and money spent transparently."
