I think its too short a notice unless we call everyone on phone. Also I suggest we use #piratesin on irc.pirateirc.net

I have trying to organize Diaspora conference in colleges in Delhi and Punjab. Also I have been discussing the motive of Diaspora movement with my colleagues and friends. During discussion there have been few questions that I think we should have clear answers in order to drive Diaspora into as much people as we can.

The first question that comes is the name itself 'DIASPORA', why we have chosen this name?
Given the fact that we are trying to reach to maximum people against popular social media, the name itself is very difficult to pronounce. I did try a small survey amongst the people around me and given the choice between Facebook/twitter and Diaspora the former was chosen. I think to popularize Diaspora we need to think more Indian name or something which is very easy to call for.

Print Material and one Document for the entire Diaspora meeting.
I think it would be easier and logical if all the meeting held across India should have common points to address among audience, so that there is no deviation.
A FAQ answering all the questions regarding Diaspora will be a help from a new user point of view. The whole idea is to have maximum user base across the world, but what benefits it will bring to the one who use over existing social media is the tough one to convince for.

@anupam what about the translation of the word diaspora into different indian languages? I am not sure if this is correct, but in hindi would it be प्रवासी (Pravāsī)?

@anupam , a palmphlet about diaspora is already being made.

An FAQ section can go into the website too. Do you have more questions from your friends?

As for the choice of "diaspora" as a name, I think it was chosen for its meaning.

diaspora: A dispersion of an originally homogeneous entity, such as a language or culture

But pods can take any name! So we could have pods with all names that we can think of :D

@anupam the name is more to do with botany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspore_%28botany%29

A profile is a seed, and a pod can hold seeds, the process of spreading seeds is diaspora.

many common questions are addressed here https://wiki.diasporafoundation.org/FAQ_for_users

There are also tutorials https://diasporafoundation.org/tutorials

The word “diaspora” refers to the dispersal of seeds (or people) over a wide area. That’s why our motif is the dandelion, and the asterisk in our name represents a fluffy dandelion seed. We refer to individual accounts on diaspora* as “seeds,” and the servers in which those accounts are collected as “pods.” You’ll get used to it soon!

Any new name or concept will take time to gain familiarity.

@akshay instead of us duplicating the FAQ, I think we should link to diaspora foundation faq and tutorial pages. If something is missing there, we should add there.
