Current status of costs and volunteers

Hamara project is sponsoring the hosting costs all this while, with costs increasing as we expand, we should launch a crowd funding campaign. We also need to find more volunteers to support server maintenance.

We should also evaluate if we should continue to maintain diaspora service. I personally think we should look at it after we ask the community for funds and at least till diaspora has pod migration feature (hopefully in 0.8 release).

diaspora 0.8 milestone: https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora/milestone/35 about 88% complete.

Things we need for crowd funding:

  1. Explain the importance of what we do. Explain problems of centralized platforms collecting personal data and influencing even elections (Cambridge Analytica, recent revelations of Wall Street Journal about Facebook ties with ruling govt etc). Text, illustrations and videos.

  2. Decide where we are going to accept donations. We usually use personal accounts of volunteers or accounts of registered organizations.

  3. Share the details of crown funding widely.

The meeting was quite fruitful and following decisions were made:

  1. diasp.in server will be migrated from Vultr to Hetzner

    • @Dhanesh Sabane to create the issues on GitLab and share them with the team

  2. @vik@hamara and the Hamara Project will continue to sponsor the server until we have a crowd funding setup in place. A separate call will be organised after the server migration activities to discuss crowd funding.

  3. Diaspora* will be upgraded and continued to be maintained atleast till the 0.8 version release. Another call shall be scheduled within the team to decide it's fate after this release.

All activity around server migration can be tracked on the following milestone:

There is also a separate milestone for all the cleanup activities:

@Dhanesh thanks for the minutes and creating issues. I will start with verifying the versions we currently use on the existing server (diaspora package may need some work).
