Prav app website text
namaste.
I tried to read the Prav app website as a non-techie and felt it addresses people:
Who care what XMPP is
Who care what Quicksy is
Who care about privacy
I feel it could:
Leave XMPP out of it until the end, and say "interoperable with other apps using open standards"
Not mention the backstory, and hence not Quicksy until a credits section
Talk up no ads and no AI!
It is great that sponsoring upstream gets a clear mention. But it seems unfair to the Prav operators to offer a 3-year plan, setting long-term expectations before getting enough users. Atleast make refunds after the first year possible, and mention it.
Some technicalities it is light on are:
Message archiving - for how long?
Account portability - how would it work?
Message portability - can the app backup to Google Drive and restore from it?
It is also missing compelling applications possible in XMPP that you wouldn't expect from corporate silos. Does it have polls? Does it have anything else?

It is also not clear if I can get an ID of my choosing on the phone-number-based XMPP service instead of my phone number. As I recall, Quicksy says people already having XMPP accounts can register their phone number for a fee. But it is not clear that I can opt of phone number use and discovery and still be a member of the service.

Serves me right for "knowing" where to write, rather than checking.

Many active people in Prav are also here, but all people here are not actively involved in Prav. There may also be people only active in Prav. We are building Prav as an independent entity as some of its priority, focus, choices and strategies may not match with fsci. But philosophies of Free Software and privacy match. Prav can make and promote specific projects whereas fsci may need to be neutral, like Prav chose xmpp, but fsci will have to consider xmpp, matrix and delta chat on similar position as all of them fit into the fsci philosophy.

We can follow this up on Prav xmpp group or in codeberg issue tracker to make sure we don't miss something.

I think we get a lot of mileage out of volunteer artifacts like XMPP. But if we set our gratitude aside and look at the landscape, we will see that the corporate silos have made fairly unimportant stuff like message backup to the cloud a selling point; such points need to be addressed.
