Organizing shared info on our website..
I have an idea--
We share so many links here and on our piratesin xmpp conference on various topics.. Some link or the other is put up everyday and we share quite a bit of information amongst ourselves..
Right now I've got more than 200 bookmarks on my browser and over a hundred articles saved as pdf files on my computer.. I'm sure a lot of you might have bookmarked the ones you are interested in too..
Why dont we do this in an organized manner which could benefit everyone?
And heres how :
We already maintain www.pirates.org.in .. In the website, why dont we make a list of the various topics we talk/share about everyday and under those various topics if we could post all the related links we have on it (along with a headline, preferably hyperlink the headline ) so it's easier for us to refer to a particular topic on a later date? ..
For example – if the topic is "Differential pricing ".. We could paste various links starting from how it all started to airtel zero rating to Internet.org and TRAI'S take on it initially
.. then moving on to modis visit to Facebook headquarters and then to FreeBasics and currently whats going on.. We paste links with headlines (hyperlink it)..
And since it's on a website, any of us could simply click on any topic and see its entire history..
More like a timeline for us with detailed information at any given time!
It could be like our own personal library!.. Only more useful and convenient!
And if it looks good enough we could even share the websites link to others so the general public can find all the info at one place organized properly..
This would keep our website up to date too and more useful to us and everyone else ..
What say? .. Do let me know if anyone's interested.
Since Im from a non tech background I have no idea how to upload / hyperlink or do any of the above mentioned so we might need a volunteer or two ..
If agreed , we could collect all the links and keep updating it on our website every now and then..

@vidyut Twitter -a big no! Im too paranoid for that :p.. Only reason I'm still on Twitter is cuz of this whole.FreeBasics and differential pricing stuff.. But storify sure sounds like something I'd be interested in.. Had no idea such a plug in even existed.. Will definitely give it a try..
But what about sharing it with others? If all.of us had storify, could we share it among ourselves..

Storify is a website on which you publish stories. It is specially designed to facilitate compilations so its features for embedding and referencing content are excellent.

Oh okay.. Sounds like something very useful.. Will give it a try.. Thanks!
Everyone else is welcome to share their idea too :)

@arjun Sorry, I duplicated your proposal!

On balance, I'm with @vidyut - starting a thread here and seeing how it's maintained makes sense.

@vik okay.. Let me try ourt storify and a couple of other apps too and see if we could use that as well..
[deactivated account] Thu 21 Jan 2016 2:48PM
@vik do u think we should try it out on loomio or elsewhere? Cuz I don't see how it's possible on here.. Say I create a thread and put down a few links on a particular topic and then someone else below mine puts down other links on another topic.. And then a third person wants to add links to my topic
.the third person won't be able to do that as he can't edit my comment.. Wouldn't be organized right? .. Whereas if we created a Google Doc or something similar we could organize it In a better way? And post the link here and let others know everytime we update it? ..
Or if u have something else in mind let me know..
Pirate Vik Thu 21 Jan 2016 4:11PM
@arjun Let's do it here to begin with - we can move it to an app or hosted site if we feel it works out?
Why not have a thread "Pirate News" that is public. People can also subscribe it to get updates.
Post your news link or story as a comment on that thread.
wdyt?
Pirate Praveen Thu 21 Jan 2016 4:50PM
You can create a sub group, then each thread can be a topic.
Akshay Thu 21 Jan 2016 4:58PM
Notwithstanding what others have said in this topic, I find a definite value in a chronology organized set of links under a particular heading that is manually curated and comprehensive. For a tiny, incomplete example, checkout http://learnlearn.in/facebook/#censorship

@vik @praveenarimbrathod done.. Let's create a sib group and under that each thread let's post the links we've got n see how it goes..
@akshay agreed.. But we can't do that here on loomio cuz we can't edit each other's posts
Akshay Thu 21 Jan 2016 5:11PM
I want to elaborate on that. (was on mobile, and yes, just told loomio that the mobile interface is congested). When savetheinternet was going on, there were times (I don't remember exactly) when some information had surfaced (with people changing sides, new support for facebook coming in, etc) and we had to look back at what was happening and how the lines of different parties involved crossed, where and at what time (think of this as detective work connecting criminals together).
This kind of cross-referencing search through time is not possible with google. Whereas it would become very easy with a encyclopedia style chronological collection of links (with dates).
Think of it as plotting data on graph. Hidden patterns can be seen when they are laid out together.

@akshay as I said earlier -agreed.. It would be useful.. But we won't be able to do that here on loomio since we can't edit each other's posts..
We could maybe give loomio a try, see if we can keep up and if it's actually worth it..
[deactivated account] Thu 21 Jan 2016 5:25PM
@akshay as a matter of fact thats the whole idea behind this.. All info about a particular topic in one place in an organized manner.. One.after the other as the events unfolded so even if someone wasnt following what was going on, he could understand by simply taking a look at the headlines..
Pirate Praveen Thu 21 Jan 2016 5:42PM
@arjun you can edit the thread description.
[deactivated account] Thu 21 Jan 2016 6:23PM
@praveenarimbrathod yes but if we want to arrange it In a chronological order we should be able to edit each other's posts.. Which we can't.. Hence a chronological order here on loomio isn't possible since different people could be submitting links on the same topic
Pirate Vik Thu 21 Jan 2016 7:14PM
@arjun Did you create the subgroup?
[deactivated account] Thu 21 Jan 2016 8:14PM
@vik not yet.. Just got off from work.. Will do now..

hahaha @arjun I'm no security whiz. When I need secure, I mostly switch to TAILS and act paranoid. Which is not as often as it should be. As someone likely to be a target of surveillance, it was an example of a list of links I'd find useful. :D
If it is simply a matter of finding recently shared links again, that is what the "like" button is for on Twitter ;) Another good way is to create a Tweetdeck tweet collection. These can be seen on Twitter, but made only on Tweetdeck. You create a tweet collection and add all the links you want to it.. That is it. It becomes a handy list of links for whenever. For when only liking a link is not enough and you'd like them collected by subect. Other and more complex examples are storify. Both tweet collections and storify stories can be embedded into a page. Storify is pretty much created for what you are describing. Can pull content from a wide variety of sources (beyond just social media), embed articles with auto excerpts or specific excerpts from it that you select, and more.
You would probably fall in love with storify.
Creating a text based collection of links seems rather.... primitive in comparison. Why go through the hardwork when you can install a browser plugin and every time you find something interesting, highlight it and "add to storify" and it is ready for use with the exact excerpt, correct referencing, etc to drag and drop into your story.
