Add an intro to the free web on our front page

A great post by Red Matrix core developer Mike Macgirvin https://poddery.com/posts/1821784

I think it sets the tune for what we are trying to do.

My disagreement may be a bit harsh, but I believe that the front page should be about what we stand for and not promotion of views from other places, no matter how good and agreeable to us. It isn't specifically about this link, but offhand, it seems like most of our votes seem to be on stuff other people do that we'd like to put up on our site or somehow endorse or oppose. While commenting on current affairs and endorsing or opposing initiatives is important and must be done, we need to figure this out better. Maybe a press releases page, with the latest press release or two listed in a sidebar... or something, rather than adoption of all sorts of content for special attention on our front page. In comparison, I have not seen much discussion on our own content creation or discussions that are important enough to make it to our own front page.

Firstly, I don't think I have voting rights yet. I saw this post on diasp.in maintainers group and thought it concerns the pod alone.

While I agree with points that @vidyut stated there is something missing. Imagine those words without knowing who wrote it or where it came from. We give importance to the idea then.

There are hundreds of free software we use daily and they are all created with the intention to share as much as possible and for people to benefit.. I think this same thought should apply to these thoughts.

It will be equally good if we can write our own words and someday people will start quoting us because of the idea it conveys. So I don't think anything should hold us from quoting someone else's words as long as it stands for a good cause.

@vidyut who is other people here? If core developer of friendica and red matrix, part of the federation including diaspora, is "other" on diasp.in, then should Indian pirates invent all the ideas? I think you got confused with adding it to pirates.org.in front page. We have to understand we are not going to change everything alone. We have to work with others, support and adopt ideas that fits with ours.

Oh oops. I did think it meant adding to pirates.org.in - I don't know why my opinion should be asked at all for diasp.in - I've hardly done anything for that project.

Apologies.

@Praveen, by "other people" - I merely meant creators of content on other sites. Any site should have a strong backbone of original content. My perception is that we adopt a lot of views rather than put up our own. We don't even evolve them after adoption. This to me seems rather.... cosmetic. It turns the front page into a promotion of other things, but then that is just me, and as a blogger perhaps I have an excessively developed possessiveness about the vision of a site.

@vidyut I thought it a good idea to get opinions from people who were part of the Diaspora Yatra campaign (you blogged about it). But if you like not to get updates from this sub group, you can leave the group. Technical decisions are taken by a small group anyway.

@fayadfami this is a subgroup for diasp.in maintainers and any member here has voting rights here.

@praveenarimbrathod Ah yes. Honored to be included. Will provide my opinion/vote where I think it will be useful.

We can explain how diaspora is transparent (diaspora is Free Software and anyone can inspect what the site does, also expenses are transparent too, ads/sponsorship without sharing personal info, user donations etc) so new people understand the difference.
