Maintenance of peertube instance.
Hi All,
I am currently maintaining a peertube instance for fsci @ https://videos.fsci.org.in/
I would like to handover its responsibility to someone .
Currently, it is running from my personal Scaleway account.
Pirate PraveenWed 28 Nov 2018 12:09PM
Yes, you and shine can work as a team. The more volunteers we have, the better.
Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerThu 29 Nov 2018 7:08AM
thanks @praveenarimbrathod . @harishk please forward any documents to tanzeem@tutanota.com
@shine we can move ahead right. please send a mail to the above mentioned mail id
harish kThu 29 Nov 2018 8:44AM
@Tanzeem Mohammad Basheer: We are already keeping server details and credentials as per the usual FSCI server maintenance process. ( Ie, details are kept in a git repo with restricted access )
Other than installation details & credentials, there is nothing much to document. But still I will try to send you some documentation.
Migrating the server from my personal Scaleway account is the most important step that we need to do on this topic.
Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerFri 30 Nov 2018 8:56AM
can you suggest an account alternate to Scaleway ? You hosted it in free account or paid account.
Pirate PraveenFri 30 Nov 2018 9:42AM
Scaleway is the cheapest we found. Do you have a credit card? We should use a dedicated account for peertube. Create a mailing list for admins at lists.fsci.org.in which can also be used for registration in scaleway and other places.
Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerFri 30 Nov 2018 11:13AM
I don't have a credit card. I use an SBI Debit card. I was ok with having technical support for maintaining the peertube instance. Will need to check whether I can provide financial support as weel. How much will it cost in INR terms or per-monthly basis.
Pirate PraveenFri 30 Nov 2018 2:12PM
We just need some one to use the credit card, we can find sponsors for the actual funding which can be transferred to the person who provide the credit card.
shineMon 17 Dec 2018 7:32PM
I use my HDFC debit card with online.net which is another partner with scaleway.com.
shineMon 17 Dec 2018 7:32PM
@tanzeem, SBI doesn't enable international transactions on debit cards, maybe you need to enable that to use your debit card on such websites.
Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerSat 1 Dec 2018 9:35AM
ok that seems good. @shine do you have a credit card
harish kSat 1 Dec 2018 4:18PM
@Tanzeem Mohammad Basheer: Also, please note that, it may not be a good idea to use any free hosting service for this purpose because, peertube does video encoding on the fly and it is a compute intensive operation.
In short, CPU & disk space requirements are not minimal for peerputbe instance. we need paid account for hosting peertube instance and when users increases, maintenance cost will increase .
shineMon 17 Dec 2018 7:36PM
I do; but I don't prefer using it unless absolutely necessary. I try to keep my online transactions to a minimum and restricted to my debit card. My debit card has international transactions enabled and has been used to pay my personal server bills at online.net.
If need be, we can put my credit card on file if that is a mandate. Let's try it out with a debit card first, shall we?

Yes, next issue is to use a mailing list as an alias for the admins, easier to manage than an email. @bhe can you create videos at fsci.org.in address?
harish kFri 21 Dec 2018 4:24AM
Hi all, Is there any update on this ? How can we finalize this process?

Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerFri 7 Dec 2018 9:07AM
what next @harishk , @shine
Pirate PraveenSun 9 Dec 2018 5:39AM
We need to get a new server at scaleway.com, using a lists.fsci.org.in alias address.
harish kWed 12 Dec 2018 5:58AM
So, How we can finalize this? I think a Riot group chat can speed up the process.
Pirate PraveenFri 14 Dec 2018 11:57AM
We can use #videos.fsci.org.in:poddery.com
harish kSun 16 Dec 2018 8:55PM
@Praveen: Is it a question to me? Sorry i couldn't understand your question.
Pirate PraveenMon 17 Dec 2018 6:09AM
No, it is for @shine and @tanzeem to solve the hosting puzzle and get a server.

This issue is done and peertube was migrated to an cloud instance in Hetzner. Thanks @harish k and @Tanzeem Mohammad Basheer for the migration and @Kiran S Kunjumon for hosting. Closing the related issue.

Do we want to keep FSCI's Peertube instance at videos.fsci.in around?
poll by sahilister Closed Wed 25 Oct 2023 7:00AM
We need to update videos.fsci.in
FSCI runs a Peertube instance at https://videos.fsci.in which hosts a few videos https://videos.fsci.in/videos/local?a-state=42.
FSCI's Peertube instance hasn't been updated since probably when it was setup back during COVID times. It's running v2.2.0, while latest Peertube is v5.2.1
It cost ~5.09 euro per month.
Do we want to keep the instance around as it involves costs and need full planning to bring to latest version.
Choose the option(s) you favor.

Although unfortunately I don't have much time and relevant expertise to support this, I can very much support this financially. So I would like to keep it going. If someone is also willing to teach me somewhat, I might try to intermittently take care on the server side.
Pirate PraveenWed 11 Oct 2023 7:23AM
If we find new volunteers, we should keep. I think we should keep the poll open for longer (1 week at least and even 2 weeks) and ideally ask around more widely for volunteers before we shut down. Unless we ask explicitly for help people outside the community won't know we need help.
Tanzeem Mohammad BasheerWed 11 Oct 2023 7:23AM
Need to update and add videos frequently. Steps should be taken to make the instance more publicly available
Raju DevidasWed 11 Oct 2023 7:23AM
Unless we/someone else are actively/intermmitently using the service, we better sunset the service to actively focus on used services.
AkshayWed 11 Oct 2023 7:23AM
I volunteer to update it. But I have no opinion on cost of maintenance. Alternatively we can just keep a static archive of the videos in some server.
Pirate PraveenSun 14 Sep 2025 10:59AM
@Akshay are you still interested in updating peertube?
AkshayMon 15 Sep 2025 2:14AM
@Pirate Praveen Oh, I don't remember what happened here. I think I volunteered because there were a couple of videos of mine present. I think the same logic applies. I don't have a comment on cost, but I can keep it updated. If it is being sunset I can do the static archive too. Will do later this week

@praveenarimbrathod may i maintain the peertube instance.
