mediawiki -> git based markdown plan

@balasankarchelamat @ambadyanands we can summarize the discussion and decide on a plan.

Motivation: maintaining a wiki without spam is a pain. If we get more volunteers to fight spam, that would be one option.

My concerns:

  1. Being able to edit easily. I think gitlab web interface is sufficiently user-friendly, though we will need a tutorial as it is not as straight forward as clicking the edit tab.
  2. About preserving history, I can let go of it if point 1 is satisfied. If we can get a good mediawiki to markdown convertor then that is nice.
  3. If we can write a url rewrite rule to map old urls to new, that would be very nice. Though this is a wishlist.

Invite others who shown interest to work on this project here.

Wiki:
Pros: Easy to contribute
Cons: controlling spam is too much effort

Plus, the current wiki has a history of activities and events happened in the past.

Git/markdown/site generator:
Pros: Tight access control, no spam
Cons: Harder to contribute

is spam control the only reason for migrating from wiki? if yes isn't it already under control after closing public registrations? instead of admin(s) creating each account manually we could make use of an extension like ConfirmAccount. also couldn't we assure quality of the content with a weekly review of recent changes? if we are going to maintain wiki i suggest to upgrade mediwiki to the latest version.

if that doesn't sound so good i think it's okay to migrate to a git based solution. found this article about migration from mediawiki to github, hope it would be helpful.

You can just share the link of the discussion and ask them to subscribe to this thread or even better ask them to subscribe to the group on loomio.

For point #2, have we thought of http://pandoc.org/ ?

Can someone post the pros and cons using wiki and other possible options(not just git based markdown plan)?

With this condition we should either
1) Stay with wiki, but security to be tightened. As @ambadyanands said, MediaWiki extensions can be used or
2) Migrate to git/markdown and make the method for contribution easier, by giving a HowTo also making a web page where users can just log in and edit/add/upload.

also are there any other benefits for git based markdown plan other than spam control??
